Justice
23 Jan to 24 Jan 2025
Which perspectives on justice – that is, matters related to moral legitimacy, fairness and rightness of idea(l)s, attitudes, practices, legal orders, and resource distribution – are shaping contemporary anthropological research? How can these perspectives be justified, critiqued or further developed? And how might using anthropological engagements with justice benefit studying the Anthropocene?
These and related questions will be addressed by our research seminar. Based on conceptual and ethnographic readings, students will learn about old and new perspectives on the anthropology of justice, identify differences between competing positions, and discuss what an anthropology of justice in the Anthropocene could look like. The course will enable students to develop their own arguments informed by the new anthropology of justice and to reflect upon its possible future directions.
